Carl Icahn buys additional 2.8 million Apple stock

Carl Icahn

Apple’s long standing investor Carl Icahn has just bought 2.8 million shares at Apple worth close to $1.7 billion, bringing his total value in the company to $4.5 billion. He now owns a total of 7.5 million shares in Apple, making him one of the largest share holders in the company.

Apple only recently announced its plans to bring a 7:1 stock split in June which will give back shareholders $130 billion as part of its capital returns program. The company also announced the increase of its share repurchase authorization costs to $90 billion from $60 billion.

Apple repurchased $14 billion worth of its stock in January, which is something Icahn has been urging Apple to do following several meetings with the company’s top brass.

Icahn was clearly pleased with this news which has now led to him buying more stock in the company. He claimed that the stock remains “meaningfully undervalued” and that “many analysts fail to understand the company”.

In addition to increasing his stock in Apple, Icahn also disclosed his stock with eBay while decreasing his stake in Netflix. You can find the complete list of Icahn’s stock purchases in the SEC link below.

EFF highlights Apple’s improved transparency and user data privacy in latest report

eff-apple

The Electronic Frontier Foundation (EFF) today published its annual “Who Has Your Back?” report for 2014 that rates companies based on how well they protect user data from both government and law enforcement requests.

Unlike previous years, Apple earned six stars in all of the categories measured by the EFF, including warrant requirements; telling users about government data requests; publishing transparency reports; publishing law enforcement guidelines; and fighting for users’ privacy rights both in the courts and Congress.

The Electronic Frontier Foundation commends Apple for making “remarkable” improvements in its commitment to protecting user data over the past 12 months. Apple, in past years, earned only a single star and lagged behind its competitors in the area or transparency and user privacy. Here is the EFF’s explanation of why Apple earned a star in each category measured by the EFF:

Warrant for content. Apple requires a warrant before providing content to law enforcement. Specifically, in its November transparency report it stated: “As we have explained, any government agency demanding customer content from Apple must get a court order.”

Inform users about government data demands. Apple promises to tell users if the government seeks their data.

Publish law enforcement guides. Apple publishes its law enforcement guidelines.

Fight for users privacy in courts. Apple is adding the following statement to its transparency report update, scheduled for May 2014.

Oppose mass surveillance. Apple is a member of the Reform Government Surveillance Coalition, which affirms that “governments should limit surveillance to specific, known users for lawful purposes, and should not undertake bulk data collection of Internet communications.”

After the public was made aware of the US government’s controversial Prism data collection program, Apple took steps to disclose government requests for user data in order to assure users it was not collaborating with the NSA in this bulk data collection. CEO Tim Cook also took a public stance against the NSA practices saying that he has “been pushing very, very hard to open the books and be totally transparent.”

Other companies earning a full six star rating from the EFF include Dropbox, Facebook, Google, Microsoft, Twitter,  and Yahoo.

Apple granted patent that prevents you from sending embarrassing messages to the wrong person

Apple has been granted a new patent by the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office called “Generation of a user interface based on contacts”, which reveals the company is working on a user interface that dynamically changes its background based on who you’re talking to in Messaging applications.

The patent explains how the background of apps like Messages app can be replaced with the image associated with the contact while the user is in a conversation. If an image is not associated with a contact then the system would generate a default male or female image based on the contact information. The background image could be dimmed or alpha-blended with a background color to ensure that it does not impact the readability of messages. This could prevent a user from sending embarrassing messages to the wrong person while chatting with multiple people at once.

messages-background-patent-1

The patent also explains how this can be implemented in case of both single and group conversations.  As seen below, in case of group messaging, the background image of the contact who last sent the message could be highlighted by greying out others.

messages-background-patent-2

The patent also describes other methods such as showing contact thumbnails in a Cover Flow, rotating carousel or contact cards with animated transitions.

It remains to be seen if Apple will include this feature in iOS 8. It is an interesting concept. Let me know what you think in the comments.

One third of smartphones sold in Q1 2014 had 5-inch or larger displays

iPhone 6 4.7-inch and 5.5-inch models

Apple is rumored to be working on at least one, and possibly two, iPhone models with larger screens. Rumored to arrive later this year, these models will enter a growing market of large-screened phones, which according to a recent Canalys report numbered 90 million in the quarter.Overall, these larger phones accounted for a third of all smartphones sold globally in Q1 2013.

This super-sized smartphone category was wildly popular, with the market for these large-screened devices growing 369 percent year-over-year. The sweet spot is between 5.0 to 5.5-inches, with only 12 percent of phones exceeding the 5.5-inch size and 22 percent coming in with a smaller screen.

Smart phones with 5? and larger screens grew 369% – a substantially greater rate of growth than the overall market. Worldwide, they represented just over a third of shipments (34%), and in Greater China the figure hit 39%, and 43% in Asia Pacific.

[...]

Consumers now expect high-end devices to have large displays, and Apple’s absence in this market will clearly not last long. It is notable that 5? and above displays featured on almost half (47%) of smart phones with an unlocked retail price of US$500 or more. Of the remaining 53% of high-end smart phones, 87% were iPhones.

Documents released during Apple’s latest patent infringement trial with Samsung show that Apple is aware of consumer interest in a large-screen smartphone. Apple’s response to this demand may come in the form of a 4.7-inch iPhone 6 in the fall, followed by a 5.5-inch model several months later.

Apple acknowledges iMessage issue that hijacks your number when switching to Android

imessage iphone

The Messages iOS app ties your phone number to your Apple ID, and ensures that people sending texts to your number arrive over iMessage, a free service, rather than SMSes through carriers, which is paid. This is great for all iPhone users, unless you happen to switch to an Android or Windows Phone.

Even after switching to a different platform, the Messages app on your friends’ iPhone continues to think that you still have an iPhone, and texts they send are delivered over iMessage, which means that you won’t see these texts on your Android phone. Moreover, the messages show up with a “Delivered” status on the sender’s iPhone, so they won’t even come to know that these messages aren’t going through.

Adam Pash, formerly of Lifehacker, had the same problem. He spoke to Apple tech support about this issue, and found that a lot of users are facing the same problem, but Apple doesn’t have a clear solution:

[Apple tech support] called me back, then explained

  1. This is a problem a lot of people are facing.

  2. The engineering team is working on it but is apparently clueless as to how to fix it.

  3. There are no reliable solutions right now — for some people the standard fixes work immediately; many others are in my boat.

One of the solutions to this problem is removing your iPhone from My Support Profile (instructions), but this hasn’t helped Pash solve the issue. Other solutions include resetting the Apple ID password, logging out of FaceTime and iMessage from all iOS devices, but these haven’t helped Pash either.

Apple is probably not doing this intentionally, but for a user, this acts like a lock-in, and makes it very difficult to switch from an iPhone, given that there’s no easy way to fix this issue or let people know that you’re no longer on iMessage.

Facebook 10.0 Update brings post previews, offline posts and faster News feed

Facebook has released a major update for its iOS app.

Facebook 10.0 update includes new features such as the ability to preview posts and the ability to create posts in offline mode. The update also includes improvements to make News feed load faster.

The preview feature will allow you to review what your post will look like before publishing it.

The offline posts feature will allow you to create posts even when you have poor connectivity or in Airplane mode.

TechCrunch also reports that Facebook is testing a new Facebook Now feature, which will bring the real-time, contextual content suggestions in the feed to mobile apps. The feature will display contextual information in the form of cards.

Now Facebook is bringing context to mobile, and applying it to the most central parts of its graph: people and photos. The cards test is rolling out to a small subset of users, and uses color-coded styles with green for content, red for places, yellow for photos, and blue for birthdays.

Facebook tells me “These cards can help you discover information about where you are or what to do next, or inspire conversations with your friends around you.  This feature respects all existing privacy settings, and the card will only show you information that you could already see elsewhere on Facebook. We wanted to make it easier for you to interact with your friends about the things you’re doing and the places you are visiting.”

Here’s how the cards will look like:

facebook-now

Facebook is currently rolling out the feature to a small subset of users, so you may not see it immediately. Facebook also hasn’t mentioned by when it plans to roll out the feature to all users.

Here’s the complete change log of Facebook 10.0:

  • Review what your post will look like and choose whether to remove any suggested links before sharing what you’re reading, watching or listening to

  • Create posts even when your connection is weak or you’re in airplane mode, and they’ll be shared once your connection gets strong enough

  • Improvements to make News Feed load faster, especially on older phones and tablets

You can download the update for free using this direct iTunes link if the Facebook app did not get updated automatically.

Let me know what you think of the new features in Facebook 10.0, and the upcoming Facebook Now feature.

iPhone 6 mockup with 5.5-inch screen compared to iPhone 5s

iphone 6 iphone 5s comparison 1

We saw images of a physical mockup of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 last month, and new images posted on Rocket News 24 compare the mockup to the 4-inch iPhone, giving an idea of how big the larger model would actually be relative to the iPhone 5s.

We’ve seen several such images comparing mockups of the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 model, but this is the first time we’re seeing images of the 5.5-inch iPhone being compared to the current 4-inch iPhone 5s. 3D models for the two rumored iPhone 6 variants are available since quite some time, so we’re surprised that it took this long for 5.5-inch iPhone 6 comparisons to surface.

The comparison images show the huge difference in size of the 5.5 inch screen and the 4 inch screen. At 157 mm in height, and 77 mm in width, the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 is significantly taller and wider than the iPhone 5s, but is much thinner at 6.7 mm versus iPhone 5s’ 7.6 mm thickness.

55_iphone_6_mockup_5s_side

The other design characteristics of the 5.5-inch iPhone 6 mockup bear resemblance to the 4.7-inch mockup, with rounded edges, pill-shaped volume buttons, and the repositioned power button.

Apple is widely rumored to release two different sized iPhone 6 variants this year, with the 4.7-inch model due for release in September, while the larger 5.5-inch variant being delayed due to yield issuesiPhone 6 is expected to include Apple’s new A8 processor, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and an improved 8-megapixel camera. The iPhone 6 will also come pre-installed with iOS 8, which may include new apps such as Healthbook, TextEdit and Preview, improved Maps, inter-app communication capabilities and more.

Here’s How Apple can transition to a ‘3x’ iPhone 6 with 1704×960 Resolution Display

iphone-6-concept-5

A report from earlier today claims that the iPhone 6 will feature a 1704×960 resolution display with a much higher pixel density. The 1704×960 display resolution is thrice the base resolution (568 x 320 pixels), and the transition to a 3x screen resolution from the current 2x Retina displays would be quite smooth.

Just like the non-Retina to Retina transition, the 2x to 3x transition would involve a proportional scaling up of image assets in unoptimised apps, and would require developers to issue updates to their apps to supply @3x image assets as well.

A MacRumors forum poster visually explained that scaling up 2x image assets for the 3x iPhone 6 display would look much better than what 1x assets scaled up to 2x looked like.

3x from 2x retina

From the forums:

Keep in mind however that unlike with the @1x -> @2x transition we had in 2010, this time we’d only have a 50% enlargement rather than 100%.

The thing is, a 50% enlargement with interpolation doesn’t look worse than a 100% enlargement with pixel-doubling, despite the loss of details due to the interpolation. [...]

As you can see, older non-@3x-optimized apps would actually look better on an @3x iPhone than non-@2x-opitmized apps did on an @2x iPhone. Add to this the fact that the screen’s pixel density would be higher this time around, and the perceived image quality difference would be even smaller.

iOS 8 will presumably automatically handle optimising system-drawn elements like text, vector icons, etc., for the higher-resolution screen, so that it looks sharp and crisp. This optimising will be done without developers having to update their apps.

text 3x

9to5Mac notes:

Sources say that core user interface elements, from iOS functions like the Home screen, Notification Center, and Settings panels, will simply appear like larger versions of those functions on the current iPhone display. However, sources also say it is likely that developers and Apple itself will be able to optimize some applications to better utilize the larger screen area. It is possible Apple could revamp the Home screen and other functions between now and this fall’s launch.

To see how the existing iPhone interface would scale up, 9to5Mac tweaked the iOS Simulator to run at 3x mode.

Here’s how the home screen would look on the higher resolution iPhone 6 display. As you can see, the number of apps in the home screen grid remains the same, but their size increases.

homescreencomparison

Similarly, here’s how the Notification Center would look on the larger screen. Since the interface is mostly text, Apple would need to make very few tweaks to get Notification Center ready for the iPhone 6:

notificationcomparison-1

The Calendar app on the other hand makes use of image assets for search, add and list buttons, and they will appear pixellated until Apple uses @3x images for the buttons:

calendar iphone 6

Apple’s known to make transitions between new screen sizes, new resolutions as easy as possible for developers, and this @3x approach is the easiest for developers, because apart from providing high-resolution image assets, they won’t have to make any other layout changes for their apps. The transition also ensures that users would get the best experience possible with apps not optimised for 3x mode.

Let us know what you think of Apple’s transition strategy to 3x screen resolution in the comments below.

Research Project Cider Makes Running iOS Apps on Android Possible

A bunch of PhD students at Columbia University have managed to get iOS apps running on an Android tablet, and they have a video to prove it. The team of computer science students are using an OS compatibility architecture called Cider to accomplish this, which runs multiple binaries on one device, rather than utilizing a traditional virtual machine.

The full abstract from their recently-released research paper:

We present Cider, an operating system compatibility architecture that can run applications built for different mobile ecosystems, iOS or Android, together on the same smartphone or tablet. Cider enhances the domestic operating system, Android, of a device with kernel-managed, per-thread personas to mimic the application binary interface of a foreign operating system, iOS, enabling it to run unmodi?ed foreign binaries.

This is accomplished using a novel combination of binary compatibility techniques including two new mechanisms: compile-time code adaptation, and diplomatic functions. Compile-time code adaptation enables existing unmodi?ed foreign source code to be reused in the domestic kernel, reducing implementation effort required to support multiple binary interfaces for executing domestic and foreign applications.

Diplomatic functions leverage per-thread personas, and allow foreign applications to use domestic libraries to access proprietary software and hardware interfaces. We have built a Cider prototype, and demonstrate that it imposes modest performance overhead and runs unmodi?ed iOS and Android applications together on a Google Nexus tablet running the latest version of Android.

Basically, to achieve this amazing feat, the team had to use many different binary compatibility techniques including diplomatic functions, which enable the iOS apps running on the device to access and interact with Android hardware and software. Check out the team’s official demo video of Cider below:

In the video, the team demoes a host of well-known iOS apps running directly on a 2012 model Nexus 7 tablet. Using Cider running on top of the Android OS, apps like Yelp, Apple iBooks, and Apple iTunes Remote all perform fairly well considering they were built to run on a completely different kernel. As you might expect, though, not everything works perfectly; apps that rely on certain hardware such as the camera and GPS won’t work completely.

One of the main goals of this project was to reduce lag and make running iOS apps on Android a feasible and smooth possibility, but Cider still doesn’t work perfectly. Apps still suffer from a decent amount of lag, but probably less than they would if they were being emulated. The research paper says that this is due to an incomplete implementation of OpenGL ES.

While there aren’t any known plans for Cider to ever be released as a full-fledged product, the team says that it plans to continue development and it’s definitely interesting to see that something like this is possible. You can read the full research paper here: Cider: Native Execution of iOS Apps on Android.

Flappy Bird to return to the App Store in August with multiplayer feature

flappy-bird1514

According to CNBC’s Kelly Evans, who spoke to developer Dong Nguyen, Flappy Bird will return to the App Store later this year with a new multi-player feature.  Though he didn’t provide a concrete date, Nguyen said the new version of the game could be ready as soon as August.

Nguyen also told Evans that he is working to make the game less addictive. This addictive quality was one of the reasons Nguyen cited when he pulled the game from the App Store earlier this year. Besides working on a new version of Flappy Bird, Nguyen also has been working on other games, including one that allows the player to jump from building to building. These new details were gleaned from a series of tweets posted by both CNBC and Evans, who  was able to secure an interview with Nguyen, even though he prefers to avoid the spotlight. The clip will air sometime today on CNBC’s Closing Bell.

Flappy Bird was an unexpected smash hit that quickly climbed to the top of iOS App Store charts earlier this year and kicked off a social media craze surrounding the app. The game was known for its 8-bit graphics and difficult gameplay that challenged players to fly a small, yellow bird through a series of pipes. At the time of its removal, the game was generating over $50,000 a day in advertising revenue and was downloaded more than 50 million times.

Would you like to see Flappy Bird return?  Let us know in the comments.

iPhone grabs 36.6 percent of Japanese mobile phone market

iphone-5s-5c-hero

Apple’s share of the Japanese mobile phone market is on the rise, climbing 11 percentage points year over year. According to a report in Bloomberg, this climb is due in part to the expansion of the handset to Japan’s largest wireless carrier NTT Docomo, which started offering the phone last September.

iPhone shipments now account for more than a third of Japan’s mobile phone market in the period ending March 2014. This figure is up 11 percentage points from last year when Apple’s iPhone models accounted for a quarter of the phones in the country.

Apple boosted iPhone shipments in Japan to 36.6 percent of the market in the year ended March, up from 25.5 percent a year earlier, according to Tokyo-based MM Research Institute Ltd. The Cupertino, California-based smartphone maker shipped 14.43 million phones in Japan the past fiscal year, the researcher said.

Other handset makers behind Apple include Sharp with 13 percent market share and Sony with 12.3 market share. Samsung was number six with 5.7 percent market share.

These results echo an earlier report from Kantar World Panel that pegged Apple’s smartphone market share at a dominant 56.7 percent. The popularity of the iPhone again was attributed to NTT Docomo, with the iPhone responsible for more than 40 percent of sales on the wireless carrier. Japan will be a key are of growth for Apple going forward as smartphone penetration in the country is low compared to Europe and the US, where the majority of cellular customers already own a smartphone.

iPhone 6 may feature 1704×960 Resolution Display with significantly higher pixel density

iphone-6-concept-5

Apple is planning to make a significant change in the resolution with the launch of iPhone 6, reports 9to5Mac.

The report claims the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 could feature a 1704×960 resolution display, which would be three times the base resolution (568 x 320).

The iPhone 5s comes with a 1136 x 640 resolution display, which is two times the base resolution. The report claims that Apple plans to retain the same 16:9 aspect ratio as the iPhone 5s, iPhone 5c, and iPhone 5.

This would mean that the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 would feature a display density of 416 ppi, and the rumored 5.5-inch iPhone 6 would feature a display density of 356 PPI. The report points out that Apple plans to increase the resolution to ensure that pixel density is within its threshold for a “Retina Display”.

This means that Apple will likely be tripling the aforementioned “base resolution” (568 x 320) of the iPhone screen in both directions, and that the iPhone screen resolution will be scaled with an increase of 150% from the current 2X resolution of 1136 x 640. Of course, Apple tests several different iPhones and display technologies, so it is possible that Apple chooses to take another route for display specifications for the 2014 iPhone upgrade. [..]

[..] So, regardless of whether Apple goes with a 4.7-inch or 5.5-inch panel—or both—the new iPhone(s) will have significantly more dense screens in comparison to current and past iPhones, which will result in crisper text, images, and video for users of the next-generation Apple smartphones. Also, by definition, both screens will have pixel densities that fit comfortably within Apple’s threshold for a “Retina” display.

It has been speculated that Apple will increase the resolution to 1334×750 for the 4.7-inch iPhone 6 to maintain the 326 ppi density, which is the display density of the iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. However, the pixel tripling (3X) mode makes a lot more sense and would be easier to implement for both Apple and third-party app developers.

notificationcomparison-1

homescreencomparison

The report notes that Apple has been testing the 1704×960 resolution display, however it is not clear if Apple plans to go ahead with that resolution for the next generation iPhones.

Apple is widely expected to release two variants of the iPhone 6 this year, which may feature an all-new ultra thin design, narrower bezels and rounded edges. The first variant will have a 4.7 inch display, which could be launched as early as August, followed by the larger 5.5-inch model in September

In addition to the larger screens with higher pixel density, iPhone 6 is also expected to include Apple’s new A8 processor, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and an improved 8-megapixel camera. The iPhone 6 will also come pre-installed with iOS 8, which may include new apps such as Healthbook, TextEdit and Preview, improved Maps, inter-app communication capabilities and more.

Apple restricting vacation time for its Retail Employees in September for iPhone 6 launch

apple-store-zorlu

German website iFun.de reports that Apple is looking to restrict vacation days for its German retail employees this September possibly for the launch of iPhone 6.

Apple is likely to restrict vacation days in other countries as well.

Last year, Apple had cut down vacation time for its AppleCare employees between September 15 and September 28 for the launch of iPhone 5s and iPhone 5c. Apple carrier partners also tend to cut down vacation time for their staff for the launch of the new iPhone.

Apple is widely expected to release two variants of the iPhone 6 this year, which may feature an all-new ultra thin design, narrower bezels and rounded edges. The first variant will have a 4.7 inch display, which could be launched as early as August, followed by the larger 5.5-inch model in September. There are speculations that Apple will also launch its long-rumored iWatch smartwatch alongside the new iPhone.

iPhone 6 is also expected to include Apple’s new A8 processor, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and an improved 8-megapixel camera. The iPhone 6 will also come pre-installed with iOS 8, which may include new apps such as Healthbook, TextEdit and Preview, improved Maps, inter-app communication capabilities and more.

Nintendo takes down Popular Game Boy Emulator ‘GBA4iOS’

GBA4iOS - Game Boy Advance Emulator for iOS

GBA4iOS, a popular Game Boy emulator for iOS has been shut down after Nintendo filed a Digital Millennium Copyright Act (DMCA) takedown request.

GBA4iOS allowed gamers to play Game Boy Advanced, Game Boy Color, and original Gameboy ROMs directly on their iPads and iPhones.

GBA4iOS 2.0 which was released in February brought several new features including an iPad version, Dropbox support and cheat codes. You could install the GBA4iOS using Mobile Safari on your iPhone or iPad, and more importantly without jailbreaking your iOS device.

The emulator took advantage of Apple’s Enterprise Distribution program, which allows the installation of non-App Store apps without the need to jailbreak a device.

Riley Testut, the teenage developer of GBA4iOS has clarified that GBA4iOS will continue to work on devices it has already been installed on, but new downloads have been suspended.

Meanwhile, NDS4iOS, an emulator for Nintendo DS for iOS which was released in April is still available. I won’t be surprised if Nintendo tries to take it down as well by filing a DMCA takedown request.

Popularity of emulators for iOS like GBA4iOS, NDS4iOS highlight why Nintendo should reconsider its decision not to bring its games to the App Store.

Beats Music rumored to have only 111K paying subscribers

beats-music

Beats Electronics launched its US-based music streaming service in January of this year, entering a crowded market dominated by Pandora, iHearRadio and Spotify. As echoed in an earlier report, Beats Music may be struggling to attract paying customers, with a small subscriber base of only 111,000 users in March 2014, claims a report in music industry blog Trichordist that was relayed by The Guardian.

These subscribers numbers were taken from a royalty report, leaked to the Trichordist, that lists the number of customers who are paying for the service. Of these accounts, 49,371 are individual accounts, while 61,621 are “family” accounts that can have up to five users. This 111K figure places Beats far behind its competitors, such as Spotify that has 6 million paying subscribers globally and more than 1 million in the US as of March last year.

Apple is rumored to be buying Beats Electronics, at least partially for its streaming music service. Though Beats’ music subscriber base is comparatively low, Apple may be eyeing the service’s potential for growth as streaming services expand to become the dominant method for listening to music.

streaming-music-growth

A recent chart from Statista and published by Business Insider reveals this growing trend towards streaming music and away from traditional downloads, which has been the focus of iTunes since its launch. In the year between 2013 and 2013, downloads have declined 1 percent, while streaming has jumped 49% and now accounts for a fifth of all US music revenues.

Sonos updates its iOS Controller app with Universal search, new redesign

sonos-controller

Sonos today updated its Controller app for iOS to version 5.0, bringing a brand new redesign and a handful of new features including universal search. Introduced in March as a limited beta, the final version of the Controlled is now available publicly in the iOS App Store.

Sonos speakers connect to your home WiFi network and allow you to stream both the contents of your music library and your subscribed streaming services to any group of speakers using the Sonos controller app. The new universal search is the biggest improvement, allowing you to search across all your music services at the same time to find the song that you want to hear. Previously you had to search each service on at a time.

The full list of changes in version 5.0 is as follows:

  • Sleek New Design: Effortlessly control your world of music with an app designed by and for music lovers.

    • Touch the SONOS icon at the top to display the SONOS music menu.

    • Touch the room name at the top right to display the ROOMS screen.

    • Easily access Shuffle and Repeat from the queue pane.

    • Access Crossfade and Sleep Timer from the Info & Options pane.

    • Using your phone, swipe to toggle between the Now Playing screen and the last place you browsed; using your iPad, drag and drop tracks or albums directly into the queue or the Now Playing pane.

  • Explore Music Services: From popular favorites to specialized music services, Sonos makes it easy to browse our wide selection and discover new ways to explore the world of music.

    • The More Music menu option has been renamed Add Music Services.

    • The music service detail pages include descriptions of available services in your country.

  • Universal Search: With this update you can now search across all of your music services at once to find and enjoy the music you love.

    • For example, if you have three different music services installed, a search for the artist Beck now returns relevant matches for all three.

    • You can quickly jump across categories with the tap of a finger.

  • Surround Mode: If you have surround speakers connected to your PLAYBAR, you can now change the surround setting for music playback (this setting does not apply to TV audio).

  • Choose from Ambient (default, subtle, ambient sound) or Full (new setting that enables louder, full range sound).

  • The following settings have been added to the Manage Music Library menu: Schedule Music Index Updates, Sort Folders By Compilation Albums

  • The following settings have been added to the Advanced Settings menu: Wireless Channel, Audio Compression, Auto Check for Updates

  • VoiceOver is supported on iOS7.

The Sonos Controller app for iOS is available now in the iOS App Store.  The entry-level Sonos speakers start at US$199 for the Play:1.

Jailbreak Tweak Roundup: Vibe, Almpoum, quickCam, Daily Dash, IfFound

ios-7-jailbreak

Here’s another jailbreak tweak roundup for those of you that are looking for some more useful tweaks. We have 5 new tweaks that you might want to check out, so let’s go ahead and jump right in.

This is a pretty unique and free tweak that will tell you the time without having to take your iPhone out of your pocket. If you need to know the time when it’s not kosher to pull out your iPhone, such as while you’re in a meeting or on on a date, then you may want to check out Vibe. Vibe uses a gesture that you can activate while in your pocket and it will vibrate the time. Check out the video for a walkthrough of the tweak.

Here is a free tweak that will allow you to manage your screenshots. There a few options that you can configure in the settings, like automatically saving to a clipboard, saving to your camera roll, or both. Check out the video below for a detailed walkthrough of the tweak.

quickCam

This tweak isn’t very original and I think it’s good to know when to not to check out a tweak as well, especially when it’s a paid one. This tweak is $1.99 and allows you to set an activator gesture to open up the camera. It has some limited functionality compared to the actual camera app and the tweak can basically be duplicated just by adding a gesture in Activator to open up the camera app. Check out the video for the full review.

Daily Dash

If you use Twitter, than you might want to check out this free Cydget. What this Cydget does is give you what the top three things are that are trending on Twitter right on your lock screen. After installing, just make sure you enable it in Settings>Cydget>Lock Cydget Order and you’re good to go.

IfFound

This is a pretty awesome tweak that will help you retrieve your lost iPhone. IfFound is a $0.99 tweak that puts a button on your lock screen that will present the finder of your iPhone with all of your contact information so the finder can get it back to you very easily. It has two separate options to choose from, which are simple and detailed. Select your option, fill in the required information, and give the person who finds your iPhone to do the right thing.

Tim Cook Charitybuzz lunch auction ends with $330,000 bid

tim-cook-auction

Tim Cook’s charity auction for a one-hour meeting with the Apple CEO at the company’s Cupertino headquarters ended today with final bid of $330,001. This auction is Tim Cook’s second fundraiser for Charitybuzz, with last year’s coffee meeting bringing in $610,000.

The winner of the auction will be able to meet with Tim Cook for a one-hour luncheon meeting at Apple’s headquarters in Cupertino, California. The auction includes the cost of the meal, but the winner must provide their own transportation to the event, which will take place on a “mutually agreed upon date” within the next year. To sweeten the deal, Tim Cook also offered the winner the opportunity to be a VIP guest at an upcoming Apple event.

Proceeds from this year’s auction will go to the RFK Center for Justice & Human Rights, a charity that “strives to achieve Robert Kennedy’s vision of a just and peaceful world by partnering with human rights leaders, teaching social justice and advancing corporate responsibility. This year’s event earned significantly less than last year most likely due to a new credit card requirement for all participants who wanted to bid on the auction.

How to mute user on Twitter for iOS

Twitter recently rolled out the ability to mute accounts, letting you mute tweets from someone you follow. In this post, we tell you how to mute tweets and retweets from annoying users using the Twitter iOS app.

Mute from a Tweet

See an annoying tweet? Here’s how to mute the person who posted it:

  • Tap on the tweet you want to mute

  • Tap the ••• icon

  • Tap Mute and Yes, I’m sure to confirm.

Mute from a Twitter user’s profile

You can also mute a Twitter user from his or her profile:

  • Go to the Twitter user’s profile

  • Tap the gear (settings) icon

  • Tap Mute and Yes, I’m sure to confirm

Unmute a Twitter user

If you’ve muted someone, but want to read their tweets in your timeline again, here’s how you do it:

  • Visit the muted user’s profile on Twitter

  • Tap the red mute icon to unmute

Apart from mute, you could also consider unfollowing, blocking or reporting a user for spam. The difference between mute and block is that with mute, you just mute the user’s tweets, while in block, along with muting tweets the user also won’t be able to interact with you. A user won’t know if you have muted their tweets, while with block a user is told that you’ve blocked him or her. It is sort of like hiding a user from the news feed in Facebook, and the user has no clue. They can continue to favortie, retweet, and reply to your tweets, and you’ll still see their interactions in your notifications tab, but their tweets and retweets won’t appear in your Timeline.

Twitter still hasn’t completed rolling out mute to all users, so if you don’t see the option to mute, you might see it in a few weeks. Let us know if you’ve got the feature, and if so, how you’ve found it till now.

Hoax EarPods with built-in sensors rumor turned into reality with LG’s Heart Rate earphones

heart rate earphones

Earlier this month, a crazy rumor predicted that a new version of Apple’s EarPods will come with inbuilt Heart Rate and Blood Pressure sensors, but that rumor was found to be a hoax. LG however is turning this rumor into reality with its Heart Rate Earphones, that were originally introduced in January at CES.

LG’s Heart Rate Earphones is the latest product in the health and fitness wearables market, that offers real-time biometric information for use with a companion accessory like a wristband or a smartphone. Much like the rumored iWatch-iPhone combo, the Heart Rate earphones sends this information via Bluetooth for use with LG Fitness App available on iOS and Android. The earphone has sensors to measure blood flow through the inner ear, and a Voice Guide keeps telling you about your workout progress.

Here’s how LG describes the Heart Rate earphones:

This LG FR74 monitor comes with earbud headphones, so you can easily listen to music while keeping track of your heart rate, heart rate zone, time, distance, speed, cadence, pace, consumed calories and cardiovascular fitness (VO2Max).

The earphones are quite expensive, at $180, and the companion wristband accessory called the Lifeband Touch costs $150.

The EarPods rumor predicted a lot of features in addition to heart-rate monitoring, including iBeacon integration to ensure earphones don’t get lost, and an extra mic for better noise cancellation. While that rumor was clearly a hoax, Apple has applied for a couple of patents dealing with sensors embedded in earphones, suggesting that this was an area of interest for the company as early as 2007.

While LG’s earphones are priced high, do you think you’d be interested in a similar offering from Apple? Let us know in the comments.

Verbatim: New Tweak is a Modern Text-Based Lock Screen Replacement

4

A new jailbreak tweak by the name of Verbatim was released to the public today, and it brings a classy, clean, and modern text-based lock screen to replace the default. By way of Cydget, this tweak presents a variety of information on your lock screen including missed calls, charge status, weather information, and more.

As you can see in the screenshots above, the tweak’s easily readable text lock screen includes a redesigned clock which shows the seconds as well as many lines of valuable information regarding the current status of your device. Similar in concept to the text-based lock screen clock Timely that we covered recently, Verbatim is a verbal display of unread email count, unread text and iMessage count, the number of apps that need be updated, the current charge status or your device, and basic temperature information.

Unless you already have Cydget installed, installing the tweak and respringing will present you with a new lock screen and a Cydget welcome message. The first step to getting started with Verbatim is to head over to the Settings app and reorganize your Cydgets. Open the Cydget settings panel and tap “Lock Cydget Order” to access a menu that will let you put Verbatim on the top. Disable the other options, leaving Verbatim the only item enabled.

Head back to the Settings main page and tap the “Verbatim” section. To get started, you need to input a weather code for your region. To find this, head over to this weather location code finder and type in your city. After you’ve found your code, insert it in the “Weather City Code” box. Below this you’ll see an option to choose Celsius or Fahrenheit, an option for the text display animation, and a toggle to choose between 12 and 24 hour format time.

Additionally, there are options to hide a variety of lock screen elements including the Status Bar, Grabbers, the “Slide to Unlock” text, as well as the ability to set a custom slide to unlock text string. Finally, there’s a slider for selecting the lock screen dimming time. After you have the tweak configured, you might want to use a tweak such as HideMe7 to hide even more lock screen elements to ensure a clean and glitch-free experience.

You can get Verbatim on the Cydia Store for $1.99, and it’s compatible with both iPhone and iPad. Would you prefer Verbatim over the default lock screen?

Future iPhones May Have Virtual Sidewall Buttons as Described in New Patent

sidewall

A new patent discovered today reveals that Apple, on the brink of announcing the next iPhone later this year, is already planning some exciting features for iPhone revisions in the years to come. Apple was recently granted a patent that outlines technology for interactive sidewall displays, allowing for virtual buttons to replace hardware buttons currently found of the side of Apple mobile devices.

The patent, No. 8,723,824 as seen on the United States Patent and Trademark Office Website, is titled “electronic devices with sidewall displays” which is more accurately described within itself as being a method wrapping flexible displays around a device’s sidewalls. As noted in the original report at Apple Insider, this isn’t the first time Apple has patented this kind of technology; the technology is less ambitious here, though, and could potentially be implemented soon.

sidewall 2

Interestingly, the document outlines that at least one side of the wrap-around display would have a bezel screen as well, attaching the sidewall display to the device’s main screen. The patent describes the side screens as running down the entire side of the device, but potentially being covered by paint or otherwise in places where the sidewall touch panel wouldn’t be used. Locations where virtual buttons would be placed would be left uncovered of course, leaving openings for the active touch sensitive areas.

The most exciting part of technology like this one day landing on our devices is that putting screens like this on the side of the device would free up screen real estate on the main touchscreen. Additionally, the sidewall screens would be customizable, which would allow the most efficient use of the space depending on applications being run and tasks that need to be accomplished. Physical buttons are incapable of this, and can only be used for one purpose in most cases.

patent2

The patent outlines many of these potential additional use cases, including app icons displayed on the sidewalls for various uses, scientific operations when using the calculator app, and many different camera buttons to be used when the camera app is in use. Gestures can also be used on the sidewall displays just like the front-facing display to allow many other use cases including slide-to-unlock, caller ID and system controls, and many more.

The patent also lists other technologies, including tactile feedback buttons underneath the virtual buttons which take advantage of the flexible display. This physical button, located beneath the surface, can allow for the buttons to remain relatively physical while their uses can be changed depending on the situation. As you can see below, a dome switch would be theoretically placed beneath the surface which would be depressed when using the virtual buttons.

patent3

The next generation iPhone, rumored to be called the “iPhone 6? isn’t expected to have any of the above described technology, but flexible displays are definitely starting to be commonplace in the industry, with Apple’s rumored “iWatch” said to be including one when it’s expected to be announced later this year. Other companies are already utilizing this technology in their smartphones, which could mean Apple may not be far off.

Would you like to have virtual sidewall buttons on your iPhone?

Apple may introduce High Definition audio playback in iOS 8, launch new Lightning cable and In-ear Headphones

We’ve already seen plenty of physical mockups of iPhone 6. We’ve seen it in silverin gold and space gray, it has been compared to an iPhone 5s to give us an idea of how the larger iPhone will stack up against the 4-inch iPhone, the 5th generation iPod touch to highlight the design similarities and even compared to Samsung’s latest flagship Android phone, the Galaxy S5.

Folks at 9to5Mac have published a new video, which compares the iPhone 6 physical mockup with latest Android flagships, HTC One M8 and Samsung Galaxy S5.

The iPhone 6 physical mockup looks quite similar to the HTC One M8. When HTC launched the HTC One smartphone in 2013, it was considered a close cousin of the iPhone 5 in the looks department. If Apple goes with the all-aluminum back casing then the iPhone 6 will look even more similar to the HTC One (M8). I like the way HTC has handled the cut outs for the antenna bands, and hope Apple takes a similar approach.

iphone6-htconem8-galaxys5

The HTC One (M8) and the Galaxy S5 come with 5-inch and 5.1-inch screen respectively will be slightly bigger than the rumored 4.7-inch iPhone 6. Apple is widely expected to unveil iPhone 6 with larger screens this year to compete with Android based smartphones that usually come with larger screens, so it is interesting to get an idea on how it stacks up against the latest Android flagships.

Apple is widely expected to release two variants of the iPhone 6 this year, with an ultra-thin design, narrower bezels, rounded edges and more. The first variant will have a 4.7 inch display, which could be launched as early as August, followed by the larger 5.5-inch model in September.

iPhone 6 is also expected to include Apple’s new A8 processor, Touch ID fingerprint sensor, and an improved 8-megapixel camera. The iPhone 6 will also come pre-installed with iOS 8, which may include new apps such as Healthbook, TextEdit and Preview, improved Maps, inter-app communication capabilities and more.

iStick is the first Made for iPhone, iPad USB drive with an integrated Lightning connector

istick mfi iphone ipad usb drive

Hyper makes accessories for Apple products, and its latest product called the iStick is the first Apple-approved Made-for-iPhone/iPad USB flash drive that comes with both a USB as well as a Lightning connector so as to work with computers and iOS devices.

The iStick is a small accessory that has a sliding switch with a USB port on one end and a Lightning connector on the other. With the USB end, you can use the iStick as a regular USB flash drive, and you can access the same data on your iOS device through the Lightning end of the switch.

istick usb drive ipad iphone

The accessory has a companion app lets you play music, download photos and watch videos stored on the drive, without occupying any additional space on your iOS device’s inbuilt storage. Videos can be in almost any format, including native formats like mp4, m4v, mov as well as non-native formats like avi, mkv, wmv etc. You can even use the iStick to share data between two iOS devices.

The iStick drive comes in 8GB, 16GB, 32GB, and 64GB variants and costs $129, $169, $199 and $299 respectively. The product is available for pre-order through a Kickstarter crowd-funding campaign, where you can reserve an iStick for 50% off, which makes the costs $65 for 8GB, $85 for 16GB, $99 for 32GB and $149 for 64GB.

The lack of an option to expand iPhone or iPad storage can be frustrating at times, but I’m hoping the iStick makes up for the lack of an SD card slot on iOS devices. Let me know what you think about the iStick in the comments below.
